The disease

The "West Syndrome" is a catastrophic epileptic encephalopathy... It's the first thing we hear from parents when we go to the doctor's office saying that our baby doesn't smile or that he gets a little frightened when he wakes up every morning. Because West Syndrome is very subtle; it's spasms that the baby suffers between 3 and 12 months of age that, at first glance, don't seem alarming enough to make you run to the hospital.

But yes, they are terrible; they are epileptic seizures that the "little one" suffers. These seizures can be caused by prenatal, perinatal or postnatal causes... In total, there are more than 200 different causes, making it a real "catch-all". With luck and many drugs, the crises can be controlled, although the damage is already done and the baby will suffer, in most cases, lifelong consequences. If, in addition, the crises are not controlled, the syndrome mutates into a Lennox-Gastaut.
